Congress: We Need A “National Strategy” To Address Job Losses Due To Self-Driving Vehi...
For the vast majority of Americans, any concerns about autonomous vehicles are mostly safety-related. But many in the trucking world are concerned about the impact self-driving trucks could have on their jobs. It turns out, some members of Congress are worried about that too, and have called for a “national strategy” to address the issue. Both the White House and the Department of Transportation have made their support for autonomous vehicle development known. But the House Appropriations Committee says that not enough attention is being paid to potential downsides. According to FreightWaves, the Committee chastised the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration for not providing “sufficient oversight” over the development of self-driving technology. “While the Committee recognizes the vast potential of automated vehicles, the Committee is concerned that this technological transformation may displace workers who currently earn their living driving a vehicle,” reads an Appropriations Committee report published this… .....
