How Hur Misled the Country on Biden’s Memory

How Hur Misled the Country on Biden’s MemoryFirst impressions stick. After a big story hits, the initial conclusions can turn out to be wrong, or partly wrong, but the revisions are not what people remember. They remember the headlines in imposing font, the solemn tone from a presenter, the avalanche of ironic summaries on social media. Political operatives know this, and it’s that indelible impression they want, one that sticks like a greasy fingerprint and that no number of follow-ups or awkward corrections could possibly wipe away.Five years ago, a partisan political operative with the credibility of a long career in government service misled the public about official documents in order to get Donald Trump the positive spin he wanted in the press. The play worked so well that a special counsel appointed to examine President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents, Robert Hur, ran it again. In 2019, then–Attorney General…

‘I Would Not Blindly Trust Them’: How Journalists Should Approach AI

‘I Would Not Blindly Trust Them’: How Journalists Should Approach AIThe news business is falling apart and here comes AI to finish the job — at least that’s what some worry. AI isn’t the first and is surely not the last technology to upset the journalistic status quo. The telegraph and then the telephone allowed reporters to file dispatches from blocks or thousands of miles away. The Linotype machine obliterated the labor-intensive craft of hand-setting type in the 1880s. Radio moved news instantaneously. Computers replaced the Linotype, displacing thousands of skilled production workers. The early vibrations of AI have already been shaking the newsroom. One downside of the new technology surfaced at CNET and Sports Illustrated, where editors let AI run amok with disastrous results. Elsewhere in news media, AI is already writing headlines, managing paywalls to increase subscriptions, performing transcriptions, turning stories in audio feeds, discovering emerging stories, fact…

The surcharge for using a credit card may be about to fall

The surcharge for using a credit card may be about to fallMerchants reach settlement with credit card companies on ‘swipe fees’ By Mark Huffman of ConsumerAffairs March 27, 2024 After years of lawsuits, Visa, Mastercard and the largest credit card-issuing banks have reached a settlement with merchants. They have agreed to lower fees for accepting credit cards, often called swipe fees. The agreement means all rates will go down by 0.04% for three years. The average rate across all payment networks would fall by 0.07% for five years. Lawyers for the merchants said the agreement would provide $30 billion in fee relief over five years. According to the Nilson Report, credit card companies collected $72 billion in total fees last year. Steve Shadowen, co-lead counsel representing the merchants, said the settlement is a significant victory for both businesses and consumers. “This settlement is the culmination of eight years of hard-fought…

Chris Christie withdraws from consideration for ‘No Labels’ presidential run

Chris Christie withdraws from consideration for ‘No Labels’ presidential runFormer New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie turned down an offer to run for president  on a “No Labels” ticket on Wednesday. The No Labels group has struggled to put forward a ticket challenging both former President Trump and President Biden in the 2024 election. The group contacted Christie about a potential run last week after he appeared to leave the door open to a third party run in a public interview.”I appreciate the encouragement I’ve gotten to pursue a third party candidacy. I believe we need a country that once again feels like everyone has a stake in what we’re doing and leadership that strives to bring people together, instead of using anger to divide us,” Christie said in a statement. “While I believe this is a conversation that needs to be had with the American people, I also believe that if there…

Comer Appears to Back Away From Biden Impeachment, Offers Alternative In Fundraising Email

Comer Appears to Back Away From Biden Impeachment, Offers Alternative In Fundraising EmailTom Williams/CQ Roll Call via AP Images House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) appeared to back away this week from his vow to impeach President Joe Biden. Comer, who has been fundraising throughout his impeachment inquiry into Biden, sent out a mailer earlier in the week offering an alternative to impeaching the president. In it, Comer slammed “deranged Democrats” in the U.S. Senate for refusing to move forward with the House’s impeachment of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, which initially failed to pass the House and eventually passed by the slimmest of margins. “It’s clear that Democrats will choose their party over their country and the truth at every turn. They should be ashamed of themselves. That’s why I am preparing criminal referrals as the culmination of my investigation,” Comer wrote in the email, which was first…
