Matt Gaetz Is Winning

Matt Gaetz Is WinningUsually, you need about 10 minutes to walk from the Rayburn House Office Building to the House Chamber. But if you’re running from a reporter, it’ll only take you five. When Matt Gaetz spotted me outside his office door one afternoon early last November, he popped in his AirPods and started speed walking down the hall. I took off after him, waving and smiling like the good-natured midwesterner I am. “Congressman, hi,” I said, suddenly wishing I’d worn shoes with arch support. “I just wanted to introduce myself!” I had prepared a long list of questions, hoping for a thoughtful conversation but ready for a tense one. He was a firebrand, after all, or so said the title of his 2020 memoir, Firebrand.Gaetz is a creature of our time: versed in the art of performance politics and eager to blow up anything to get a little something. He…

The AI Revolution Is Crushing Thousands of Languages

The AI Revolution Is Crushing Thousands of LanguagesRecently, Bonaventure Dossou learned of an alarming tendency in a popular AI model. The program described Fon—a language spoken by Dossou’s mother and millions of others in Benin and neighboring countries—as “a fictional language.”This result, which I replicated, is not unusual. Dossou is accustomed to the feeling that his culture is unseen by technology that so easily serves other people. He grew up with no Wikipedia pages in Fon, and no translation programs to help him communicate with his mother in French, in which he is more fluent. “When we have a technology that treats something as simple and fundamental as our name as an error, it robs us of our personhood,” Dossou told me.The rise of the internet, alongside decades of American hegemony, made English into a common tongue for business, politics, science, and entertainment. More than half of all websites are…

Messi the dog is retiring from the TSA after work screening travelersViewMeet Messi. His handlers say “he was clearly born to work for the TSA,” and said when he wasn’t screening passengers he enjoyed watching airplanes and playing in the grass at the popular Gravelly Point field, near D.C.’s Reagan National Airport. This good boy is now retiring from service with the Transportation Security Administration as one of hundreds of the canines that train each year to work as passenger screening agents at U.S. airports.Messi and dogs like him spend about 16 weeks learning how to adapt to the hustle and bustle of busy airports, and to meet their handlers, with whom they’ll form deep work bonds.  SEE MORE: Dozens of animals rescued from Maryland house fireThe TSA says there are more than 1,000 canine handler teams that deploy to support screening and security operations around the country. From ‘Tiny Desk’ to LPFM

From ‘Tiny Desk’ to LPFMBob Boilen (Photo via X) After retiring from National Public Radio last year, Bob Boilen has taken on a new challenge — program director for WOWD-LP in Takoma Park, Md. Boilen spent 35 years at NPR where he created the broadcaster’s well-received “Tiny Desk Concerts” and “All Songs Considered” programs. He also directed “All Things Considered” for 18 years. In October 2023, speaking on “Morning Edition” after his retirement was announced, Boilen told hos Mary Louise Kelly that what he wanted to do was to make music. “I’ll have time for that. I make sort of ambient music of my own, and I make albums with my band Danger Painters, which is really fun.” He also mentioned that he was DJing “on this little low-power FM station.” Starting June 1, 2024, Boilen will become PD for the station, WOWD-LP Takoma Radio. Since August 2021, he has…
