The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: Anything to Declare?

The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: Anything to Declare? What We’re Following TodayIt’s Friday, February 15. President Donald Trump signed a spending deal to avert a government shutdown. But Wait, There’s More: During his free-associative remarks from the Rose Garden, Trump said that he is officially declaring a national emergency in order to access funds to build his border wall. He also plans to reallocate approximately $8 billion in agency funds. Many Republicans have expressed misgivings about the move, and Trump’s decision serves as a test of their willingness to oppose the president. In response, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said they’ll take action “in the Congress, in the Courts, and in the public.”Trump, in his speech, seemed to undermine his own case for the national emergency: “I can do the wall over a longer period of time. I didn’t need to do this,” the president said….

Insisting on Resistance in an Age of Ignorance

Insisting on Resistance in an Age of IgnoranceEditor’s note: This article was originally published on Truthout.  Ignorance now rules the U.S. Not the simple, if somewhat innocent ignorance that comes from an absence of knowledge, but a malicious ignorance forged in the arrogance of refusing to think hard about an issue. We most recently saw this exemplified in Donald Trump’s disingenuousness 2019 State of the Union address in which he lied about the amount of drugs streaming across the southern border, demonized the immigrant community with racist attacks, misrepresented the facts regarding the degree of violence at the border, and employed an antiwar rhetoric while he has repeatedly threatened war with Iran and Venezuela. Willful ignorance reached a new low when Trump — after two years of malicious tweets aimed at his critics — spoke of the need for political unity. Willful ignorance often hides behind the rhetoric of humiliation,…

Democrats’ Wall Funding Fiasco

Democrats’ Wall Funding FiascoRepublican and Democratic lawmakers agreed this week on a border enforcement funding deal to avert another government shutdown. Both houses of Congress have approved it, and President Donald Trump signed it—and then declared a national emergency to get the balance of the wall funds that Congress refused to give him. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has already said he’ll support the declaration. So after all the drama of the last few months, did the Democrats accomplish anything beyond virtue-signaling to their base? And the resounding answer is: No. After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pledged not to give Trump even a dollar for his wall, Democrats agreed to hand him $1.375 billion to build a 55-mile long barrier in the Rio Grande Valley. They also agreed to hand the Department of Homeland Security an additional $1.7 billion for border security, including more officers, more technology at ports of entry,…

Reports Of Trucker Threatening Cops With Machete Were False Say Police Involved

Reports Of Trucker Threatening Cops With Machete Were False Say Police InvolvedA road rage incident between two truckers led to a police chase across state lines. But the widely reported story that the trucker threatened police officers with a machete has now been debunked by the department that made the arrest. It all started at a Pilot truck stop on I-10 in Alabama. Two truckers were reportedly arguing. One of them, 33-year-old Michael Mack, drove away from the incident. EMS personnel who happened to be nearby at the time reported that they saw Mack driving recklessly. They contacted the authorities and followed him. Mack reportedly used his truck to swerve toward the ambulance whenever they got close. By the time police officers arrived, he had actually hit and damaged the ambulance. Police officers pulled Mack over a short time later, but at some point during that initial stop, Mack took…

The End of the American Republic

The End of the American RepublicLast week, after much back-and-forth about a second government shutdown, America’s mostly useless Congress managed to pass a funding bill, which the president reluctantly signed. Still at issue was the question of funds for his long-promised (and largely imaginary) wall along the Mexican border. The bill included some face-saving funds for border barriers, and you can easily intuit congressional negotiators’ futile hope: Democrats could go home and claim the money would buy nothing more than a bit of insubstantial fencing, and Republicans could claim the president got what he wanted. Trump himself could have claimed as much, but he is a man constitutionally incapable of leaving well enough alone. Instead, he did what he’d been threatening to do during the kayfabe of budget negotiations: He declared a state of national emergency and said he was going to take a few billion out of the bottomless…
