War-Gaming for Democracy

War-Gaming for DemocracyIt’s January 21, 2025, the first full day of the second Trump administration. Members of a right-wing paramilitary group, deputized by the president to patrol the border, have killed a migrant family. Video of the incident sparks outrage, sending local protesters swarming to ICE detention centers. Left-wing pro-immigrant groups begin arriving in border states to reinforce the protests, setting off clashes. In response, the Democratic governors of New Mexico and Arizona mobilize National Guard units, ordering them to disperse the paramilitaries. But these groups, having been deputized by the president, are recognized under Articles I and II of the Constitution as legal militias. The commander of the New Mexico National Guard refuses orders from the governor, saying that migrants pose the true threat, not patriotic Americans defending their homes. The governor summarily relieves him of command. On his way out the door, the general pledges to “continue to follow…

They Make Viral Gun Videos—With Hardline Christian Values

They Make Viral Gun Videos—With Hardline Christian ValuesAt the start of a slickly produced 19-minute YouTube video titled “How T.Rex Arms Got Started,” Lucas Botkin, the company’s 30-year-old founder, runs through an obstacle course. A guitar-heavy soundtrack plays as Botkin, decked out in tactical gear and filtered through overwrought video effects, picks off targets with a variety of handguns and rifles. We briefly see the course from his eyes, first-person-shooter style. When the drums bang to a halt, the video cuts to an interview where Botkin explains his company’s mission. “We try to produce thought-provoking content and educational content that inspires people to understand their obligations to God and country and their responsibilities,” he says, over more shooting footage. “Then we equip them with the equipment necessary so they can fulfill those obligations and those responsibilities with maximum effectiveness.” T.Rex Arms, a Tennessee-based, family-run, Christian firearms accessory company—think holsters, body…

Where RFK Jr. Goes From Here

Where RFK Jr. Goes From HereWasn’t Robert F. Kennedy Jr. supposed to have flamed out by now? At a rally yesterday in Oakland, California, Kennedy—a lifelong Democrat turned independent—unveiled his 2024 running mate, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan. Kennedy selected Shanahan from a motley crew of reported vice-presidential contenders: Aaron Rodgers, Jesse Ventura, Mike Rowe, Tulsi Gabbard, and the rapper Killer Mike, to name a few.Shanahan is by no means a household name. Yet she could bolster Kennedy’s outsider ticket in three pivotal ways. She’s just 38 years old and may help him appeal to younger voters. Several states require candidates to file a two-person ticket as a ballot-eligibility requirement, so her sheer addition could help move those efforts forward. And, of course, she has money: Her charitable donations suggest she is worth tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. “The purpose of wealth is to help those…

Scaleway launches Mac mini cloud instances

Scaleway launches Mac mini cloud instancesCloud hosting company Scaleway is adding a new type of instances today — Mac minis powered by Apple’s M1 chip. The new instances cost €0.10 per hour, around $0.12 at today’s rate — there’s a minimum commitment of 24 hours. Scaleway is hosting those new computers in its DC4 data center in Paris — it’s a former underground nuclear fallout shelter. Right now, the Mac minis aren’t available in the company’s other data centers in Amsterdam or Warsaw. When you boot up a Mac mini from the console, you get an entry-level Mac mini with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD and macOS Big Sur. And of course, it uses Apple’s first Arm-based chip, the M1. After that, you can connect to the instance using VNC — you’ll see the desktop environment and you’ll be able to use it like a normal Mac. You can also connect…

Thinking of switching banks? Here’s what you need to know.

Thinking of switching banks? Here’s what you need to know.Fake banks? Sadly, they do exist so be careful. By Gary Guthrie of ConsumerAffairs March 28, 2024 Think your bank is jerking you around with fees and less than good customer service? You wouldnt be alone. The U.S. banks have certainly given consumers enough reason, with things like federal agencies having to rescue customersfrom outlandish fees and banks throwing in the towel and closing for good without as much as a peep to their customers. Things are so bad that a new Motley Fool survey shows that 76% of respondents said they are likely to switch banks if they find one that better meets their priorities, up from 52% in 2020. Especially the younger generations. The researchers found that more millennials already have one foot out the door, ready to switch banks, as opposed to baby boomers, although 67% say they…

Simply ‘Lieberman’: The independent and enigmatic politics of the late Connecticut Democ…As I write this, I’m befuddled as to how to identify the late Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman. He died from a fall at age 82 in New York this week. For writing purposes, do I stylize him as “Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn.?” Or do I write “Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn.?”This subject vexed me for years. It became even more acute after Lieberman departed the Senate in early 2013. I’ve had the opportunity to mention him or write about the late senator in passing. But the conundrum as to “what” Lieberman “was” politically is an enigma. And it attests to his staunch independence, refusing to align himself too closely with one party or another.CONGRESS EXPECTED TO CONSIDER EMERGENCY SPENDING MEASURE TO REPLACE BALTIMORE BRIDGE AFTER COLLAPSEVoters sent Lieberman to the Senate in 1988 as a Democrat. He defeated late Sen. Lowell Weicker,…
