  • Alliance Looks to Improve Captioning Workflow
    Broadcasting solutions provider ENCO and captioning company VITAC, a Verbit company, announced an alliance to expand broadcasters’ options for hardware encoders and cloud captioning. According to the companies, the alliance combines VITAC’s experience with captioning solutions, ENCO’s encoder technologies, and Verbit’s expertise in AI-driven speech-recognition solutions to provide innovative solutions for caption encoding and delivery. “We are excited to join forces with VITAC in this strategic partnership,” stated ENCO President Ken Frommert. “By leveraging our respective strengths, we aim to offer broadcasters a broader range of options for caption encoding and delivery, ultimately enhancing their ability to deliver accessible content to viewers.” Doug Karlovits, VITAC general manager, noted that the alliance will allow for the integration of Verbit Captivate automated speech recognition technology into ENCO’s suite of encoder solutions to improve their captioning workflow.     Pure orange juice might have some unexpected benefits.Researchers from Toronto Metropolitan University researched the effects of drinking 100% orange juice compared to a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB), or "orange drink," on appetite, food intake and glycemic response in adults.The study was funded by the Florida Department of Citrus. It was published in the journal Nutrients and also surveyed emotions and sensory characteristics associated with the beverage.APPLES VS.     Conservative Supreme Court justices on Tuesday questioned the Justice Department’s use of a 2002 statute against obstructing an official proceeding to prosecute a number of people involved in the January 6 attack on Congress. In pressing Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar on how broadly the DOJ can apply the law, several justices offered similar hypotheticals. “Would a heckler in today’s audience qualify?” Justice Neil Gorsuch asked. “Why has no one been charged for disrupting the Supreme Court?” Justice Samuel Alito asked, referring to previous protests that briefly disrupted high court hearings related to the court’s 2022 Dobbs ruling overturning abortion rights.  Alito’s question led Prelogar to assert that peaceful protesters who cause only brief interruptions of government proceedings would likely not be prosecutable under the obstruction law, in part because the government would struggle to prove they had “corrupt intent”—a requirement of the statute.
